Osteoarthritis of the Hand and Being Overweight - What's the Connection?
Hand joints are non-weightbearing joints. Hips, knees, and ankles are weightbearing joints. Weightbearing joints affected by osteoarthritis can be burdened even more by overweight or obesity. How does being overweight affect non-weightbearing joints, like the hands?
Using a population-based study involving 3,585 study participants who were 55 years old or older, researchers questioned if being overweight may be associated with the development of osteoarthritis through other metabolic factors.
