Insoles May Ease Knee Pain

Tuesday March 25, 2008
Insoles can help reduce pain associated with medial component (inner) knee osteoarthritis. The special insoles, known as lateral-wedge insoles, lessen pain by changing the mechanics of the knee. About 67 percent of knee osteoarthritis patients have medial knee osteoarthritis, while 10 to 16 percent have lateral knee osteoarthritis. The rest are affected in the region behind the knee cap (patellofemoral region).

  • How do lateral-wedge insoles reduce pain?
  • Who may be helped by lateral-wedge insoles?
  • How effective are lateral-wedge insoles?

A lateral-wedge insole is worn inside the shoe. It is thinner at the instep and thicker at the outer edge of the foot. The angle of the lateral-wedge insole can be customized for individual patients. Read more in Lateral-Wedge Insoles Are Used to Treat Medial Knee Osteoarthritis.
