There is more than one option when you need a new knee replacement. You may need a total knee replacement or a partial knee replacement (also called unicompartmental knee replacement). Your individual medical history and current x-rays will help determine which procedure is right for you.
The knee has three compartments:
- the medial compartment (inside aspect of the knee)
- the lateral compartment (outside of the knee)
- the patellofemoral compartment (in front of the knee)
In some knee osteoarthritis patients, only one compartment of the knee is affected. Actually, it is usually the medial compartment that is affected by osteoarthritis. The lateral compartment can be affected, but it is less common. In those patients, a partial knee replacement may be sufficient.
Many surgeons feel uncomfortable with the unicompartmental or partial procedure because of lack of precision. MAKOplasty offers more precise and consistent results for unicompartmental knee arthroplasty though. What exactly is MAKOplasty?
