Does exercise increase or decrease your OA symptoms?

Exercise usually decreases my OA symptoms.

How have you benefited from regular exercise?

I have been able to stay active into my 50's.

Anything you don't like about regular exercise?

I suffer if I overdo my exercise regimen.

Do you wish you had started exercising earlier in life?

No. You run the risk of overuse injuries, if you start too early in life.

Starting an Osteoarthritis Exercise Routine

I have my father to thank, for starting me in the martial arts. I was lean in build, so I avoided most power sports. I depended on my coaches and instructors when I started out. I really enjoyed sports that incorporated running and jumping. Recreation and Parks was my major in college. I began to read up on articles in periodicals for training advice. I also became more savvy, at finding and interpreting exercise research articles. I looked at programs that were successful. However, I had to decide if these programs would work for me. Individualized programs worked the best.

Describe Your Osteoarthritis Exercise Routine

My cycling season runs fron April to October or so. I ride 4-6 days per week. My training is based on the 180 method. I also do core strength training year-round. Most of the exercises are performed on a stability ball 2-3 times per week. The core strength program takes 25 minutes. I substitute a 45 minute core program once a week in the Fall/Winter. I also walk in the winter. A heart rate monitor is utilized, during all my aerobic training. I try to compete in bike races too. All of my exercise training is recorded in a training log/diary daily.

Advice

  • Seek out the support of a fitness consultant, before starting an exercise program (I am a fitness/nutritional consultant). Seek out exercises that you enjoy. Have the program personalized for you (and your symptoms). Try to eat in a healthy way. You really have to know how to refuel your body, after exercise. Remember that the best gains are enjoyed, after your body has recovered properly. You must recover from everything you do daily. Also make sure you are properly hydrated daily.
